Snowed in in New York

My neighborhood the morning after the snow. 9-13 inches, depending on where in NYC you were.

New York when it snows has such a distinct smell. It's kinda weird. My theory is that the snow dampens the smell of garbage and car exahust and what you smell is just all the street foods.

Moving on to Midtown, do you know what this is? If you said crosswalk, you're right! And this is one of the better ones. Worse ones include piles I need a running start to climb over (really, there's one by my work) or giant puddles of liquid slush so big and so deep you have to walk a good ten feet or more down the block to get around it.

See the bike? There's a lot of these.

Despite the fact that the lesser used streets are full of snow, and the high-traffic ones like this one a slushy, not to mention the sun is in your face everywhere, so many people were out. I can't even describe how packed the steets were. It took me over 5 mins to cross a closed down street at Heralds Square because there were so many people. Because despite fighting your way thru slush, this was the nicest weather we've had in weeks. Barely any wind. 32 deg. Sunny.

And, I have to admit, when the sun sets and all the tourists swarm to...where ever they disapear to at sunset (plays and restaurants?) the city under snow is quiet like it never is, and it's kinda lovely.

The worst part of all this snow is that it forces me to cross streets at corners and obey traffic signals. I usually just cross where and when I can.

Christmas stuff!

Hmmm, you can't really tell from this picture, but the streets are lined in christmas trees for sale and scarey blow up people.

Tara ordered me new parts to repair gear!! It's like an early christmas present!

Alli and Melinda sent me these cookies. They're so cute.

Finally snowed in NY.

Look at this huge dead rat we found in the basement at work!! That barrel next to it is over a foot long!! It was bigger than most squirrels!! Plus, after we brought it up to look at how big it was, the whole shop smelled for hours.

Ah, the traditional dead christmas rat. Welcome to New York.
